I grew up in Pittsburgh, Carnegie's base of operations. He only got "nice" in his old age. Up until his mother died, he was a tight fisted codger. He never payed out a dividend to any of his investors, not even family members. At one of his library openings, a worker from one of his factories was said to have yelled out "a penny more wages would do me more good, I can't read!"
